Setting up a VLAN

Setting up a VLAN

We are in the process of setting up a VLAN in our Company; we have over sixty remote locations connected by frame. The frame connects to a Cisco 3640 router. My question is, in each remote location the users connect to a Catalyst 2900 XL switch. In the Data center we’re installing a Cisco 6513 switch to setup VLAN across the Campus, all these buildings are local not through the frame. All building on the VLAN will be connected with fiber to a Cisco 3548 switch. Which is layer 3. Will the remote locations be able to communicate to the servers on the VLAN in the Data center through the use of the router even though they don’t support layer 3?

Re: Setting up a VLAN

In order for devices in one-subnet to talk to devices in another sub-net, you need a router.

In your case, you have to do routing between your remote and data center routers

Re: Setting up a VLAN

Another option would to purchase an MSFC card for your 6500 switch and let the 6500 do the routing for your campus and let your 3640 route your frame and WAN.
