As you would know a switch is nothing more than a bridge with multiple ports. And in the process of forming the shortest path tree, it needs to assign port ids to all its ports particpating in the spanning tree. So the switch assigns some port id (bridge port id) to all the active interfaces for this purpose. I am not sure the mapping is permanent. I heard the allocation might change based on switch configuration, ie., if port-channels are configured then the mappings might change., etc
