Hi
I need to make a cable to connect two routers with smart serials back to back. Does anyone have the correct pinouts?
Thanks

So do I make one side a DCE and the other a DTE? What about the serial data protocol, must I use X21?

You can use PPP/HDLC as layer 2 protocol

I'm not sure, but I don't think you have to worry about what link layer protocol you are going to use .
First, you can consider buying two smart serial cables, one DCE and one DTE (with similar interface type at one end: V.35, X.21, EIA/TIA-232,etc) and then connect them back-to-back, and configuring one router to act as DCE.
But, if you dont want to buy the cables, and build your own cable, I think you should look for a DCE cable and its correspondant DTE cable. Imagine them connected back-to-back, look for pinouts, follow their connections and then you can start building your own cable.
