SNMP Monitor AS5300 through VPN Concentrator from private LAN

I'm trying to monitor a couple of AS5300's using mrtg from the private side of the network. The public interface on the VPN has the default public filter applied. My routing entries would appear to be correct as I can see the public interface on the VPN but nothing beyond that. Do I need to change something on the public filter or is there more to it than this. Any help would be appreciated.
