SNMP v1,v2 cisco mib definition and traps

I am not an expert of SNMP but I try to use whatup to recongnize cisco traps. I have a catalyst 5000 and 6500. I download the required mibs from cisco ftp site according to my catos version.

My question is Why the mib definitions are SNMP V2 and the traps packet received is SNMP V1?

Whatup do not recongnize the traps received and do not translated them into text?

If you know any good link about SNMP that explain that in detail let me know

If you're getting v1 traps, then you can load the v1 MIBs from:

ftp://ftp.cisco.com/pub/mibs/v1. You can also use the CCO SNMP Object Navigator (http://www.cisco.com/go/mibs) to translate the traps and then load the proper MIB(s).

It look so simple! I am using these site to dowload the mibs.

what I don`t understand is that one captured trap (chassisalarmon) is a snmp v1 but if you check chassisalarmon trap is defined in a mib V2. You seem to tell me that v1 is not compatible with v2?

there is any command in cisco to specify the snmp prefered version to use.

On the router you can use the command snmp-server host version to specify the SNMP version to use.

Thanks !

I will try the command
