SPAN with different speed settings

What happens if you're doing SPAN with a source Gigaethernet port and a destination 10/100 port? Will the buffers fill and packets started to be droped?

What if you're monitoring a trunk port? Do packets arrive ISL or DOT1Q encapsulated although your destination port is an access port

What if you're monitoring a trunk and a non-trunk port simultaneously?

Re: SPAN with different speed settings

Hi,

AFAIK:

Q:What happens if you're doing SPAN with a source Gigaethernet port and a destination 10/100 port? Will the buffers fill and packets started to be droped?

A:Yes, if there is a heavy traffic on the source port, buffers will overflow a frames will be droped. Similar situation is when you span VLAN to a port.

Q:What if you're monitoring a trunk port? Do packets arrive ISL or DOT1Q encapsulated although your destination port is an access port

A: Yes, frames are mirrored encapsulated (tagged) even while the target port is an access one.

Q:What if you're monitoring a trunk and a non-trunk port simultaneously?

A: The same as previous question. Tagged frames are mirrored tagged, untagged remain untagged.

Regards,

Milan
