%SPANTREE-6-MSGAGEEXPIRY: Msg Age timer expired on port xxx in vlan xxx

I had the following problem:

The error message

"%SPANTREE-6-MSGAGEEXPIRY: Msg Age timer expired on port xxx in vlan xxx"

occurred for all the configured vlans on the trunk ( ! ). Well, I got a couple of new root bridges.

I know that there must have been a BPDU Problem, but that Port was still connected, never got down or had any signs of errors. The port was even in forwarding. Just no more BPDU packets, obviously.

As far as I know there was no VTP change or anything else, that could have caused the Problem. Can anyone explain that behaviour ?

Only one device can be root bridge. If you added a device which became the root bridge, then you saw a significant spanning tree change, causing your error message.
