Most of our network comprises Cisco routers using OSPF in the same OSPF area. We have however some backup links provided as a managed service and we do not get any routing information from this part of the network. When I insert static routes onto our routers it removes the equivalent OSPF route and therfore only uses the backup routes. I have tried using various distance perameters but it makes no difference. Is there any way of using static routes to the same destination as an OSPF route.

Take a look at "floating" static routes.
Basically there is a distance parameter that you can add to the static routes to make the routes less desirable than ospf. The default distance for ospf is 110.
For example:
ip route 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 192.168.3.3 200
where the 200 is the administrative distance is 200.
Good Luck

You may want to consider OSPF demand circuit and if you're using PPP dialers as your backup, be sure to check out the 2nd link.
