Strange Issue preventing upgrade from IOS 12.2 to 12.3 on 3640

I've got 2 IDENTICAL (hardware, memory, etc) 3640's with the exeception of their ROM bootstraps:

3640 #1 ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 11.1(20)AA2

3640 #2 ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 11.1(19)AA

They both have 128MB/32MB

I cannot get the older rom version router to load a 12.3 image. I get this error when I try to force boot with the 12.3(3) image:

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

rommon 5 > boot flash flash:c3640-io3-mz.123-3.bin

program load complete, entry point: 0x80008000, size: 0x62a0dc

Self decompressing the image : ############################################################### [OK]

system operation may be compromised.

I've tried allocating more iomem just to see what would happen - no luck. Both routers have plenty of ram to handle the image. After failing to boot from the c3640-io3-mz.123-3.bin, it falls back to the 12.2 image also in flash.

I've seen some threads that indicate a newer bootstrap version might help (referenced some bugs in 11.1(19)AA ). If so, how do I go about upgrading/updating the system bootstrap. I have never done that before.

Thanks in advance,

Hutch

Hello Hutch,

Have you tried to boot the router without any

modules (NM) installed? Are there any recently installed parts in it?

Here's the scenario for bootstrap upgrade:

Igor-

Thanks for the link.

No I have not tried to boot without the 4 modules in it - good idea. I'll try it out and let you know.

Thanks again,

Hutch

There haven't been any new modules/parts put it in.

I just tried booting without the 2 modules (there aren't 4 like I said in my previous post) in it. Same basic results - it tries, then backs down to the 12.2 image also on flash (Version 12.2(13a):

rommon 1 > boot flash flash:c3640-io3-mz.123-3.bin

program load complete, entry point: 0x80008000, size: 0x62a0dc

Self decompressing the image : ############################################################### [OK]

I'll see if that link provides any insight.

Thanks again,

Hutch

I think I've answered my own question - at least regarding updating the rom boot image. It's just a physical chip that can be purchased and installed to update to Version 11.1(20)AA2.

Cisco Part #: BOOT-3600

I'll buy the upgrade and see if that does the trick....
