Sub-Interfaces on an Cisco 4700 series

Thinking about putting sub-interfaces on my Cisco 4700 series router running 11.1(20). Ran out of DHCP addresses and was thinking about putting a sub-interface on the FE port of the router. Activate another DHCP scope on the sub-interface so that the users can get either an DHCP address from the main interface subnet or DHCP address from the sub-interface.

Can this be done? What is the impact?

Thanks,

DTA

Re: Sub-Interfaces on an Cisco 4700 series

I would add 2 sub-interfaces, and take the config from the main FE and put it on the first sub-interface and configure your second network on the other sub-interface and do inter-VLAN routing. (ie, router on a stick)

example:

int FastEthernet 0/1

no ip address

int FastEthernet 0/1.2

encapsulation dot1q 2

ip address 192.168.2.0 255.255.255.0

ip helper-address x.x.x.x

int FastEthernet0/1.3

encapsulation dot1q 3

ip address 192.168.3.0 255.255.255.0

ip helper-address x.x.x.x
