The marketing blurb for this module states it has an oversubscription ratio of 8:1. Can anyone explain this as a 8Gbps connection to the fabric channel shared between 48-ports running at 1Gbps doesn't quite add up............
Thanks

The card is designed for the wire-closet. As such, the 8:1 oversubscription is a result of the line card architecture. Even though there is a 8G switch fabric connection there is a 6G connection to the front panel, ie 48ports/6Gbps >> 8ports to 1G.

So you are saying for each group of 8-ports (6 groups) they have to contend for a single 1Gbps connection??

Yes, that is the oversubscription. 8 ports share 1 gig. At the access layer, end users, traffic patterns are typically such that this isn't an issue. Remember the intent for this blade is the closet, not the data center.

Shame then that the data center blade is Sup 720 only.
Unless your servers are very powerful these are fine - most of our dual CPU servers peak at 140 meg. OK for this level of oversupscription.
Our bigger servers are connected to 6516's.
