hi, i have 3 3600 switch, what basic configuration should i do.
i do not want to use vlan at this point.
What for is the defaul-gateway address used.
How do i now if the port is in half full or auto mode?
thanks

I'm assuming you mean 3500. the 3600 series are routers.
the default gateway provides a path for SNMP and telnet traffic.
show run, or visual switch manager should show how the ports are setup

I feel thatz alone isnt the purpose...It provides a way for you local network to reach another network.

The DG will be the next hop for any IP traffic that doesn´t match the local network in the IP destination field. This is only for traffic originated or destinated to the switch. Not locally switched frames.
What I wanted to make clear is that in a switch (Layer 2), switched traffic will NOT be affected by the existance of the default gateway, or any other route. Instead, switching decitions will be based on MAC (typically destination) addresses.
I hope this didn´t make just noise for your question.

Patricio

Hi,
ip default-gateway is also used for Inter VLAN routing if, say, you have router-on-a-stick or RSM in larger switches
