Switch code Upgrade

Suppose a location has 500 access level switches say 6509s. And, it is required to upgrade the code on these switches.

What is the best way to do this task? with minimum effort and time.

TIA

Re: Switch code Upgrade

If you have Cisco Works, use it to push out the new code to the switches. Then use it to change the 'boot system flash bootflash:new CAT code command to show up first in the order.

Once this is completed schedule in CW the switches to be rebooted.

Without CW, it appears to be a manual process.

Hope this helps.

Re: Switch code Upgrade

Suppose you can not use Cisco Works then what will you do?

Re: Switch code Upgrade

best model for this is just to start doing it manually:

format bootflash:

all sectors will be erased, proceed (y/n) [n]? y

enter volume id(up to 31 characters): enter

copy tftp flash

ip address or name of remote host (enter ip of host holding new code) x.x.x.x

name of file to copy from? /whereever/cisco/cat6000-code.bin

name of file to copy to:cat6000-code.bin

you have so much space on bootflash,proceed(y/n) y

then set boot strings:

clear system boot all

set boot system flash bootflash:cat6000-code.bin

set boot system flash bootflash:

Im just curious as to why you are using 6509's for access layer...
