switch fabric module

they speak about the Switch Fabric Module (WS-C6500-SFM or WS-X6500-SFM2) (Catalyst 6506 switch only)

what is the function of this module? ok it's the switch fabric but

when we buy a 6506 switch, do we need to buy this module separately? or is it integrated in the 6506?

No the SFM does not come integrated with 6506. It's a add on module and you need to have fabric enabled line cards to fully utilize the SFM. Also the SFM only works with a Supervisor 2 Engine. The SFM cannot function in a chassis with a Supervisor 1 or Supervisor 1A.
