There could be two reasons for switch going into ROMMON after reboot. Either the image is corrupted or the boot reg setting is incorrect. Please check the above ; it is impossible for the image to vanish out of the switch

after reload the switch enters rommon mode, and appears to be unable to load the ios. here is the message:

ROMMON: Cold Reset frame @0x00000000

*** now I have loaded a new ios with xmodem:

Router#dir

Directory of bootflash:/

1 -rw- 39420 cat2948g-in-mz.120-18.W5.22b.bin

Router#cd ?

bootflash: Directory name

how do I prevent the switch from entering rommon mode after reboot? ***

I think the bootloader is having issues.

the problem could be a loss of stable power to the NVram in the switch. (bad backup battery) The 2948 should have a flash card port. save the image on it and change boot statment.

Did you lose the image or just ended up in the ROMMON..

WHen in the ROMMON, do dir bootflash: and "set"

and before rebooting, make sure do dir bootflash: and sh boot to make sure boot variables are correct ,,,,

You'll need to use TFTP to copy the file to bootflash after XMODEM recovery.

umm, maybe your right...but I don`t think so. After xmodem the file is loaded to bootflash. I think it has to do with the bootloader and possibly the config-reg.

here is some more info if you are curious:

Can you try to TFTP the file and give it a shot? The correct file size for the image is 3310464 and the file size you have is way off

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/cat2948g-l3

Once the XMODEM is successful, delete the incomplete file and then TFTP the file(to avoid duplicate file names in the bootflash)
