Syslog Error message 1w0d: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface FastEthernet0/x

We have installed 3548 machine and we get plenty of messages

1w0d: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface FastEthernet0/9, changed state to down

1w0d: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface FastEthernet0/9, changed state to down

within a second. There happens loss of connection for the clients.

We tried to fix the speed and the duplex on the switch port and then on the workstation but it still happens.

We tried then to activate the spanningtree portfast without success.

Any idea what can we do to avoid the trouble ?

Re: Syslog Error message 1w0d: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface FastEth

this is simply link flapping. I don't believe this causes any loss of service to end devices and I think it is unavoidable

Re: Syslog Error message 1w0d: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface FastEth

What IOS version are the 3548's?

What brand are your NICs?

What OS are using on the workstations?

Last question :) ...are you saying that you can't enable portfast or that it makes no difference when you do enable it?

Re: Syslog Error message 1w0d: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface FastEth

The IOS version is : 12.0(5)WC3b

The brand of the NICs are either 3COM or Intel (IBM drivers)

The OS we use is Windows 2000

I can enable portfast but it doesn't solve the problem.

The application which hangs is Lotus Notes. It seems to be more sensitive than others.

Please review the following document, www.cisco.com/warp/customer/473/46.html

I would suggest adjusting the carrier-delay as a possible work-around.

Thanks for the URL.

I configured Win2000 as advised.

The problem also happen with NT4 ?? And here I can't manage the power of the NIC.

I will try with the carier delay to 4.

Cheers.

Pascal
