I have a 1760 configured by ATT with T1. I want to connect it to a 2950 switch and put all workstations on the 2950. Can someone lay out the basic premise for this setup? I cannot seem to get a desktop on the 2950 to recognize the 1760.

You need to make sure that the workstations and the 1760 interface connected to the 2950 share a common IP subnet and that the workstations are also pointing at the 1760 ip address as a default gateway.
Hope this helps,

thank you for your response. the 1760 is as follows:
show ip route
12.0.0.0/8
12.31.5.96/28 is the fast ethernet0/0
this has been fixed by att. So how would i set the 2950?
thank you...

You shouldn't need to do anything on the 2950. By default, all ports of the 2950 should belong to vlan 1 and should therefore provide L2 connectivity between the 1760 and the workstations.
Is ethernet0/0 the prot connected to the 2950? If so, make sure the workstations are also configured with the same IP subnet and subnet mask and that they use 12.31.5.96 as their default gateway.
Hope this helps,

thanks again for your response.
Ok, so the 2950 could be set as follows:
In express setup:
ip address 12.31.5.2
default gateway 12.31.5.96
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
I put the router's cable into port 9 and in the smartport routine set it as a router.
I put a workstation into port 1 and in the smartport routine set it as a desktop.
does this sound correct?
thanks...

The issue is that you use subnet 12.31.5.0/24 on the workstation and 12.31.5.96/28 on the 1760.
The subnet assigned by AT&T only allows host addresses in the range of 12.31.5.97 to 12.31.5.110.
Assuming the interface e0/0 on the 1760 has address 12.31.5.97 you can then assign 12.31.5.98 to 110 to the workstations with a mask of 255.255.255.240.
Oh and one last thing, the gateway address has to be the ip address assigned to e0/0 interface not 12.31.5.96, which is the subnet address.
Hope this helps,

this is where I get lost. Let me see if I have this ok. I am thinking I do not.
12.31.5.98 used for internet access only by three workstations
12.31.5.99, 100, and 101 used for three hosting servers.
can I put this all on this switch or just the servers?
thank you...

You can put all of the servers and workstations behind the 2950 if you want and use the same subnet (12.31.5.96/28) for all devices. But remember you have only 14 usable IP addresses off the block assigned by the provider.
Or you can connect the servers to one ethernet interface on the 1760 and the workstations to another and use private addressing for those and use NAT if the workstations require Internet access.
Where are the servers currently physically connected?
Hope this helps,

the new servers are in the process of being connected to the 2950, so they are currently not connected to anything.
I am still doing something wrong...
2950 express setup:
ip address 12.31.5.120
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 12.31.5.96
server 1:
ip address 12.31.5.105
subnet 255.25-5.255.240
gateway 12.31.5.96
workstation 1:
ip address 12.31.5.108
subnet 255.255.255.240
gateway 12.31.5.96
is this example correct?

Where are severs connected then? Switchports in the 1760?
Here a couple of things about the configuration:
2950:
- 12.31.5.120 is outside the range provide by AT&T.
- 255.255.255.0 is different than subnet mask provided by AT&T.
- 12.31.5.96 is the subnet address, not the gateway IP address. The gateway address should be the IP address you assigned to the interface on the router (probably 12.31.5.97).
server 1 & 2:
wrong gateway address as well.
Hope this helps,

it was my understanding i could connect the servers onto the switch, running everything from the 2950, workstations and servers.
I made these changes, but still nothing:
2950 express setup:
ip address 12.31.5.100
default gateway 12.31.5.97
subnet mask 255.255.255.240
pc workstation:
ip 12.31.5.101
subnet mask 255.255.255.240
gateway 12.31.5.97

What do you mean when you say "still nothing"? What are you trying to do?
Can you ping between the server, the workstation and the router?
Hope this helps,

I did get it to work, thank you. I thought the express setup had written the new values but it had not. I could not have gotten through it without your help.
