TCAM Question

I just want to make sure I got this down. TCAM tables are used in Multilayer switching correct? There has to be a layer 3 process involved in order for a TCAM table to be used?

Re: TCAM Question

Actually TCAM contains the location index for layer 2 and layer 3 addresses and passes that information to the forwarding engine. SDM (switching database manager) is the software entity that manages the TCAM. The answer to your question, yes TCAM tables are used in layer 3 switching.

Re: TCAM Question

Right, they are used in layer 3 switching, but can TCAM also be used for layer 2 switching instead of CAM?

For example if I had a 3550 Multilayer Switch and I had it doing only layer 2 switching would it use a TCAM or just CAM?

I'm just trying to figure out if TCAM is used only if there is layer 3 switching in addition to layer 2, or if it can be used in layer 2 only switching as well.
