TCP/IP

Hi my name is Omkar Inamdar and I have a question about TCP/IP. Now the orignal TCP/IP model cosist of

                         Application

                         Transport

                         Internet

                         Network Access

and the new model consist of

                         Application

                         Transport

                         Internet

                         Data Link

                         Physical

My question is that why was this model changed, I mean why did they make this a 5 step encapsulation process compared to a 4 step encapsulation? Was there a problem in the new technology to break up Network Acess layer function into two seperate layer functions?

Because Andrew Tanenbaum said so. :-)

Long answer - everyone's got their own definition, including Cisco. It depends who you ask, and who you listen to.

TCP/IP

Let me reword the question

Why did Cisco expand the Network Acess Layer into Data Link and Physical layer? Wouldn't the data encapsulation process be slow?

Re: TCP/IP

Again the same that has been told you above already:

Forget about models and layers. Focus on learning actual, practical things. Also do not make assumptions about what is slow and what is not.

Re: TCP/IP

all of it is just concepts which are used in ccna only.

In the real world you deal with nothing but layer 2,3,4 and 7 which REALLY mean switching, routing, protocols and / or tcp/usp ports and Applications

If you have a layer 1 problem, you ring some monkey to check a cable

nothing is slower, its just abstract concepts anyway
