is tcp different than http etc, or does http use tcp for its transport ?

http uses tcp for its transport. Other protocols that use tcp for transport are:
ftp, smtp, telnet, pop3, and dns (for zone transfers or when requested by a client).
protocols that use the udp transport: tftp, snmp, and dhcp.
