The usage of subinterface and its benefits.

Hi,

Can someone explain to me the usage of subinterfaces and its benefit ...ie) when to use them and when not to use them.

Thank you,

Re: The usage of subinterface and its benefits.

Hi SN,

There are few benefits of using sub-interfaces.

1. If you have more than Vlan in your n/w and you want to setup inter-vlan routing, then you need to define sub-interfaces on the router to achieve that.

2.In frame-relay design we define sub-interfaces to make each and every location as point-to-point link to over-come the split horizon problem.

More-over as I said in point 1 if u want to segregate you network in two diff networks, you can use sub-interfaces, if you have port limitaion on a router.

Hi Amit,

[1] So you are saying that subinterfaces are used to have more then 1 vlan when there is not enough ports. is that correct ?

[2] For frame-relay, therefore one subinterface would be for incoming traffic and the other subinterface would be for outgoing traffic ?

Thanks a lot Amit. Appreciate your assistance here.

Hi SN,

1, Yes, mostly used for inter-vlan routing.

2. Each sub-interface will be a point to point spoke site in a Hub and spoke topology.
