To connect or Not to Connect

If you only had an Access and Distrabution layer with no Core level would you connect the 2 Distrabution layer switches?

Any other info, pro/con etc.?

Thanks

Re: To connect or Not to Connect

Its better to connect them

Assume, you dont connect the distribution layer switches.Packets from say vlan 1 on access layer, accessing vlan 2 on access layer (say both vlans are on different switches) will have to traverse first down to the distribution, and then back to the access, layer to reach the other switch.

You can prevent this, by routing the packet across a link from distribution switch 1 to distribution switch 2 if you connect them. This would reduce the latency in end to end delivery.

If you connect them, and if you have redudant uplinks from access to distribution layer, you will introduce loop topology in the network. If you configure STP properly and dont mess around, you should be fine with the loop topology.
