I have not seen this before we started a trace and after 5 hops we got protocol ? is anyone aware what it means ?

Do you still get same result?

If you extended trace (edit "trace" and press enter without an ip address)first question is protocol[]? so is you don't see this again, it may have been caused by editing "trace" pressing enter and issuing another standard trace command again.
