Is it possible to put tresholds on catalyst utp ports so an alert will be sent when it generates a certain amount of errors in a period of time. Can Cisco works 2000 play a role in this or is there third party software which can do this tasks.

Using most any network managment software you can monitor values via SNMP. You should be able to monitor any value on the catalyst switch using Cisco Works 2000. You can also try a demo version of What's Up Gold. You can set up alerts based on SNMP vlaues. www.ipswitch.com. Although you can set the switch to send SNMP traps, keep in mind you set up thresholds/alerts via the network managment software not the switch itself. Hope that helps.
