Two ASCII terminal talking with each other through IP NETWORK

Is it possible to connect two ASCII Terminal such;

Terminal+Router --(IP Network)-- Router+Terminal

Terminals are connnected via ASYNC Serial line.

And if so, how do you configure routers such that; Terminals can talk to each other through a TERMINAL EMULATION Program such as HYPERTERMINAL.

What protocol do these ascii terminal servers run? IP will work for sure. Just about anything else will have to be tunneled.
