two routers running HSRP cant ping each other

Hi

We got two routers running HSRP, and they are connected to two switches.

The two routers cant ping each other, and the switches can only ping the virtual IP and the master router. 'show standby' shows they did not detect their neighbors.

until we add 'standby use-bia', then everything is ok.

anyone has the same experience before?

check if they ping each other without HSRP.

Hi,

make sure your HSRP Groups are in the same groups. i.e. Standby 1 ip, standby 12 ip... You can use a debug standby and see if the Hello messages are being exchanged. You can look in the Arp and see if which MAC Address is really being used. My thoughts are they are not seeing each other from the get go. VLAN, Trunking Configs have been checked right? Which IOS are you runnning?

Regards,

Corey

I found out the root of MST0, where vlan 1 belongs to, was on a bridging router connected to a edge switch. After we change the MST0 root to the two core switches, the problem disappeared.

I dont know how to explain, since HSRP is not using VLAN1 to exchange information.
