type 2 and cat5 cable issue

Hi,

This is a typical layout in the production environment:

PC----cat5end-----type2end—type2walljack------------------------type2patchpanel---type2end----------cat5end----switch

The problem seems to be happening if somebody unplugged type 2end of the cable from the wall jack , the whole network goes down.

In reality this should not effect the network except only the part of the lan which is unplugged.

any thoughts...

Just out of curiousity - are you referring to the old IBM Type-2 cable spec? If so, you could have a grounding problem that could cause the symptoms you're seeing. If not, then what is the type 2 cabling type that you are referring to?

The IBM "Universal Data Connector" shorts the TX and RX pair when it is not connected to anything.

With the connector in-place, the signal passes through to the UTP/Cat5. When you unplug the UDC, you have a dead short / loopback on both sides of the cable (one from the connector on the cable, one from the connector inthe UDC wallplate).

I'm thinking your switch finds this behaviour offensive.
