When I try to configure bgp on the router it comes back with unknown protocol. The command is listed. I tried the following:
router(config)#router bgp 65000
I have looked over the command reference and this seems to be correct. What am I missing?

Do you have the correct feature set for that model or router ?
I think you need the IP Plus version.

As I knew, Cisco 1700 does not support BGP.
