Undersize frames are frames less than 64 bytes including FCS and the FCS is good.
I know of one special condition where the specs are in a gray area which will work in f.ex. 2950 switches, but not in 3550 or 3750 switches.. This has to do with 802.1q trunking and ethernet padding and the sequence of stripping these.. So if you have a device (f.ex. a nortel ip telephone) which does 802.1q/p tagging and the packet was already at minimum size, when stripping the 802.1q tag, the frame will be too short and reported as undersize..
TAC has earlier said this is because the standard doesn't say whether a packet with payload below the minimum size should first be padded and then tagged, or the other way around.
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
