Upgrading Cat6509

Hi All

We are in the process of upgrading our Cat6509 with the following

Cat6509 running hybrid IOS

MSFC

Sup1A

Fan

1300W AC

to the following

Cat6509 running native IOS

MSFC2

Sup720-3B

Fan2

2500W

Is there a particular order in carrying this out and if there is, please can you let me know or

Please can you recommend a document that will tell me the proper order in which to carry this out successfully?

Thanks

Re: Upgrading Cat6509

Hi Friend,

As you are migrating complete hardware you have to first shcedule a downtime.

Then first insert the power supply with proper power connection and then insert the fan tray. Make sure you replace the fan tray for sure because sup720 need high speed fan tray which is fan2. Then you can insert the sup card and make sure sup 720 only goes into slot 5 and 6 and not in slot 1&2.

Then you power up your switch finally with all new hardware.

AFAIK the sup 720 will default come with CATOS (Hybrid Mode) so you can convert from CATOS to

Native Mode. Have a look at this link for CATOS to native IOS conversion for sup720.

Re: Upgrading Cat6509

Thanks. Thank yoou very much

Does the Sup720 support WS-F6K-MSFC? i.e. MSFC version 1

Thanks

Re: Upgrading Cat6509

Hi Friend,

No sup720 does not support msfc at all. Even sup 2 does not work with msfc.

Sup 720 only works with msfc3.

Check this link for hardware compatibility list for sup 720

Re: Upgrading Cat6509

Thank you very much.

As at now, I cannot check this with a Show mod as it has not been installed. I am just doing a precheck.

So in the box, how can I check what MSFC is installed?

Re: Upgrading Cat6509

Hi Friend,

If you just run a command "sh mod" you will see all the modules installed including msfc in the chassis.

Check this example

Console> (enable) show module

Mod Slot Ports Module-Type Model Sub Status

--- ---- ----- ------------------------- ------------------- --- --------

1 1 2 1000BaseX Supervisor WS-X6K-SUP1A-2GE yes ok

15 1 1 Multilayer Switch Feature WS-F6K-MSFC no ok <<<<<<<=====MSFC Installed

HTH, if yes please rate the post.

Re: Upgrading Cat6509

If I'm understanding you right, you're wondering how to check which MSFC version you have installed on your sup720 before you install in in your switch ("in the box" means to me that you haven't installed it in the switch yet)?

If this is the case, you need not worry. The Sup720 comes with MSFC3, only. It will not ship with MSFC1 or 2.
