Upgrading IOS

This is the first time I am trying to upgrade cisco IOS for RAS 3640. I currently have 12.1(5). I am looking at this page:

I am confused as to which higher version to select and more importantly how to select 'Software Feature Set'.

I am posting the sh ver from my RAS 3640 which i m using for accepting calls , dial back and dial out.

You are running IP only feature set, so you should upgrade to the latest available 12.1.xT or 12.2.x IOS image. Looking at the 3640 router and 12.1 IOS, you will see that 12.1.5T12 is the latest image.

For IOS ver 12.2 the latest IP only image is 12.2.19. IOS 12.2.19 requires 32MB RAM and 8 MB flash memory, so you are good to go.

If you are planning to change the feature set, for example to IP plus, be sure to check the RAM/Flash requirements before the upgrade.

Also, upgrading from IP onlu to any other higher feature requires a fee payable to Cisco to be able to use legal the software.

It depends on the job your router has. Now you are using the router as an access server, accepting dial-in calls, dial-out and callback. For this job the IP only feature set is ok.

If you plan to implement new features on your access server like encryption, then you must upgrade the IOS to an image that supports encryption, IPSec 56 or 3DES.

If you plan to run destktop protocols like IPX and/or Appletalk, than your IOS image should have support for these protocols, IP/IPX/AT/DEC.

There is a tool on CCO, Feature Navigator, which helps you determine the IOS image based on the features you want your router to support. It gives you the memory/flash reqirements for the images.
