We have a number of sites containing 2900XL-series switches, which are dual-connected to our two core 6509 switches. UplinkFast is enabled on the access-layer switch and this works very well (the blocking link transitions into a forwarding state if the forwarding link fails.
Now we have a site where a single switch is not sufficient (port density), so a second switch is to be added. Rather than dual-attaching each switch to the core switches using expensive LX/LH GBICs, is it possible to link the two switches using GigaStack GBICs and maintain the similar spanning-tree convergence time facilitated by UplinkFast, given that each switch is not then directly connected to the core switches. In order words, will two GigaStack'ed switches behave in the same manner as a single switch, at least in terms of UplinkFast?
The two GigaStack'ed switches will behave in the same manner as a single switch.You can have redundant uplink connections, using Gigabit GBIC modules, from the GigaStack cluster to a Gigabit backbone switch such as the Catalyst 3550-12T switch. You can also create backup paths by using Fast Ethernet, Gigabit, or EtherChannel links. If one of the redundant connections fails, the other can serve as a backup path.
