VLAN 1 interface is up, protocol is down on 2950 switch

Hi, guys,

I got three 2950sx-24 switches gigastacked together(through WS-3500-xl module) and uplinked to a 6509 switch through a WS-G5484 fiber module. I configured the management interface in each of 2950 as following:

int vlan1

ip address 10.1.1.11 (10.1.1.12 and 10.1.1.13 separately) 255.255.255.0

no shut

When I do a "show int vlan1" in 2950-I and 2950-II,I got:

int vlan1 is up, protocol is down

only in third 2950, I got:

int vlan1 is up, protocol is up

but even in this 2950, I can't ping the default gateway 10.1.1.1 although I can ping its own ip address.

I tried to shutdown and "no shutdown" in interface vlan1 of those switches several times, but it remains the same.

What is the problem behind it?

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Richard

Check if you have any other vlans configured on the two switches, if yes shut them down and enter the "management" command under vlan 1.

Configure "ip default-gateway 10.1.1.1 on ur 3rd switch so that it can ping the gateway.

Thanks for your answer.

But I don't have any other vlans configured on the other switches.

To be clear, all ports of three switches have been assigned to vlan 11. (Gigastack port belongs to vlan 11 as well, not working in trunk mode). Does that mean "interface vlan 11" need to be configured instead of "interface vlan 1" ?

Is STP blocking the management port info ?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Richard

Yes try configuring int vlan 11 as your management vlan instead of vlan1
