VLAN Interfaces & MRTG

Hi all,

Could anyone tell me how reliable those interface counters on VLAN Interfaces are ?

We would like to monitor traffic - but I am not sure if this output of 'sh interface vlan xxx' is meaningful because of process & fast-switching.

Only the first packet passes through the VLAN interface - all subsequent packets are switched by this fast-switching process - and so do not increase the counters on the VLAN interface - right ?

So the output on which MRTG bases its results on - does not show the right results - does it ?

or do I have to monitor the real physical interfaces - and is that possible by SNMP ?

THX A LOT

Re: VLAN Interfaces & MRTG

There are OIDs for physical interfaces and I always monitor them over VLAN interfaces because VLAN interface counters do indeed tend to be unrepresentative.
