can I change the VLAN name on a switch and all the ports that are set to that VLAN not be affected? Some of the VLAN names are outdated and would like to update to more informational names, but don't want to cause connection issues.

Yes, changing the description will have no affect on traffic within that vlan. (Same with changing a port name, etc.)
