Hi,

Does anybody knows how can I transport 2 vlans from a catalyst 2950 switch connected via FO to another catalyst 2900XL and then from the catalyst 2900XL to a windows 2000 router with 2 nics that acts as a router.

Any documentation, tip, clue or anything will be ok.

Best Regards.

You would need to setup 802.1q trunking between the switches and then to the Windows 2000 server. First you need to check that you server NIC supports 802.1q then try to find a driver with 802.1q support. I have never seen a 802.1q driver for Windows but I have seen it for Linux servers.

Please do mind that not al 2900xl support trunking (all 8mb do, but only one 4mb 2900 suppolrts trunking) And if you do not succeed in finding a 802.1q driver for your nic it's also possible to use multi vlan mode on a interface but it would be better to just use 2 nics because of the dedicated speed does come cheap that way.

if you only have two vlan ,you can connect the two nics to two different vlan, and configure routing on the windows 2000.

if the number of your vlan is more ,you can using the nics that supports 802.1q.there are so many nics can met your need , for example 3c980 for 100Base-T and intel 1000 pro for 1000base-t ,DO pay attention to that 1000 pro can not support vlan 1

The topic is that I have linked my two switchs (2950G & 2900XL) via FO because there are in different floors, thats why I have to transport the 2 vlans that I have on the 2590G to the 2900XL and then from the 2900XL transport the two vlans to a windows 2000 router, I have two nics that are 802.1q compliant, now what I must do?

1- assign the subnets of each vlan to a nic

2- configure rip v2 and set the proper rip filters

3- check the routing table

4- check that trunk is set on in the Cat2900XL and set off in the Cat2950G

5- check that vtp mode is set to server in the Cat2900XL and set to transparent on the Cat2950G

6- What else?

Best Regards.
