We have a 250 user LAN equipped with cisco c2950 switch only . Now if we want to implement multiple VLAN over this only. Please let me know if multiple VLAN is possible on a single c2950 switch or it has to be a member of other VLAN configured configure on layer 3 switch

You would need a MultiLayer Switch or a Router configured as a central point to connect all of you VLAN's. Since VLAN's are seperate Virtual Networks, you need some way for the traffic to be routed between the VLAN's.

Split the switch into the vlans you want. Configure one port as a trunk. The 2950 can only do 802.1q trunks. Get a router with a fast tethernet that can support 802.1Q trunks. Not all fastethernets can do it, be careful what you buy. Connect it to the switch on the trunk port. Configure it with subinterfaces as the gateway for each vlan. Now the vlans are separate at layer 2 and they bounce off the router to talk to each other.

You could also get a MultiLayer Switch with a Route Switch Module. You can configure a Virtual Interface for each VLAN. This works the same way as using a router, except the Route Module routes the VLAN Traffic, not an external Router. Either way works just as well.

I prefer to let a L3 switch do the inter vlan routing. Have setup infrastructure with 2950s in the closets and 3550 at the core (the 12 port Gigabit fiber L3 model). This setup performs better than a lower end router like the 2500/2600 series.
