how can we find the vlan number if we have the ip address of a particular machine?

Hello,

I would say you need to find the VLAN interface that is doing the inter-VLAN routing. The number of the VLAN interface will be the number of the VLAN. If you do a TELNET to the default gateway of your machine, that should take you directly to the device that does the inter-VLAN routing.

Does that make sense ?

Hi Aksher,

If you know the ip address of the machine , you can also find out the mac address of the machine.

Go to the switch to which it is connected and check its cam entry table (mac address table) and there you will find the port to which that mac address is learned.

Issue a command " sh vlan " on the same switch and find that port number is assigned to which vlan.

Also if you already know the port number on switch to which your machine is connected just go to the switch and check the config of that port you will get the vlan number or sh vlan will give you that port is assigned to which vlan.
