If I am implementing vlans on my 3550 switch, with ip routing, and I am also issuing out dhcp addresses to these vlans on the same switch, do I still need to use the ip helper address command on the switch using the ip of the vlan interface ? or would it automatically use the dhcp without this command ?
cheers

Hi Carl,
If you have configured your switch 3550 itself as a DHCP server for all the clients residing in specific vlans then you do not need "ip helper-address" command.
But incase you are having an external DHCP server like windows connected somewhere on your network then you need this command to relay DHCP request to the DHCP server. You need this command with the ip address of the DHCP server.
I will request you to start rating helpful post.

No Carl you do not need the ip helper-address command in this case.
