vlans on 1720

I have a 1721 running feature set c1700-k9o3sy7-mz.122-15.T8.bin

I have some subinterfaces configured for dot1q vlan encapsulation. I've loaded the same IOS version on a 1720 at tried the same operation

conf t

inter fa0.1

encapsulation dot1Q

Can anyone tell me why I can setup vlans on a 1721 and not a 1720 when loaded up with the same version of IOS?

I know the 1720 has been EOL'd but dot1q vlans is such a trivial/common feature these days. The IOS version and feature set is EXACTLY the same. From what I know the 1720 ad 1721 aren't THAT different.

I'm just kinda ticked that Cisco has to stagger their product offerings so ridgedly in order to squeeze people into hardware upgrades..

Re: vlans on 1720

1720 cannot do multiple Vlans. 1721 can, as you already know.

It's not an IOS version thing, its just that a 1720 is a single vlan router.

Re: vlans on 1720

You are correct. 1720 platforms do not support ISL nor dot1Q.

Check Table 1:
