vlans

If I have 2 switches connected via and uplink port, If I have 2 vlans on each switch, and say plug a pc in vlan 2 in switch 1 and plug a pc in vlan 2 in switch 2, will they see each other if i dont have trunking between the switches ?

you will need a layer 3 device for inter talk between 2 vlans.

Hi there, I didnt want to route between vlans, I just wanted to know if vlan 2 on switch 1 would see vlan 2 on switch 2 without a trunk between them.

Hi Carl,

They can see each other without a trunk if and only if you connect the 2 switch using an access port configured for vlan 2.

If you do not have a trunk or an access port configured for vlan 2 they will not see each other.

Hi Carl,

Assuming that the link between the two switches has default configuration, it will be an access link that is part of vlan 1, so the vlan2 traffic will not pass between the two switches unless you configure it as a trunk.
