VMPS and wake on lan (WOL)

We have a network with 2 cisco 4506 switches and 20 cisco 2950 switches. Recently we activated vmps and everything works fine except a wake on lan problem. When a pc that is connected to a port in dynamic mode and the pc is turned off, the port goes into a unassigned vlan and doesn't receive the wake on lan packet.

port config :

interface FastEthernet0/8

switchport access vlan dynamic

switchport mode access

spanning-tree portfast

spanning-tree guard root

result of the show interface status cmd :

Fa0/8 connected unassigned a-full a-100 10/100BaseTX

I can configure the 4506 switches to "forward" a wol packet from one vlan to another (conversion to multicast and back) but i don't know if is its posible to the "unassigned" vlan.

Any idea to solve this problem?

Kind regards,

Re: VMPS and wake on lan (WOL)

VMPS and the "Wake On Lan" (WOL) card feature are not compatible.

The main reason ist he the fact that a unused port does not belong to any VLAN. As soon as the switch clears the entry from the CAM table due to PC inactivity, the dynamic port gets to the unassigned state. The PC can not be woken up anymore since no 'wake up' packet can get thru the port as the port is no longer assigned to a VLAN so the "Wake on LAN" frame will not be unicast flooded out the switch port. The port does not belong to any VLAN and will not forward any unknown unicast, broadcast or multicast. The only workaround here is to change the port to static membership on ports with a WOL card attached.

If you had a CAT 6500 running 8.3(x), we have 802.1X Unidirectional Controlled Port feature.

Hope this helps.

I had this problem too, and posted it here, about this time last year. The consensus was that it couldn't be done. Here is a link to the thread:
