vtp and Catalyst2948G

Does C2948G support vtp? I tried to find command to configure vtp and check vtp information but failed. So is it true that we need not consider vtp when using it with other catalyst switches such as 6509?

Thank in advance for any advice!

Re: vtp and Catalyst2948G

"The Catalyst 2948G-L3 does not support several Layer 2-oriented protocols, such as VTP, DTP, and PAgP, found on other Catalyst switches."

See http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/29.pdf for details.

Re: vtp and Catalyst2948G

Thanks a lot! but why? so if there's any solution for that?

It's style of configuration is somewhat weird compared with other catalyst switches.

Re: vtp and Catalyst2948G

Hi,

there is no "solution", I'm afraid.

2948G-L3s (running IOS) don't support VTP. You have to configure VLANs manually on them.

If you want ot use VTP, use 3550 (more powerfull, standard IOS configuration, too) instead of 2948G-L3.

Or you can use 2948G (L2) running CatOS (see http://cco-rtp-1.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps663/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a0080122393.html)

Re: vtp and Catalyst2948G

From a configuration standpoint, the 2948G-L3 is a router. Rather than extending VLAN's, this router terminates them by default. You can configure bridge groups to gain L2 switching functionality, but overall, this device is geared for routing.

You can think of it as a Cisco Router with 48 ethernet ports.
