VTP and Spanning Tree

Hi all,

Just a quick question regarding STP.

Is it possible to run different types of spanning tree (RSTP, CST and STP) within the same VTP domain without causing any undesirable convergence issues??

Regards,

Chris

Re: VTP and Spanning Tree

You can as long since most STP types are compatible. But its always a good idea to be consistent and stick with one mode. Also, having multiple STP modes needs planning on root placements etc.

Re: VTP and Spanning Tree

PVST, rapid-pvst and MST don't get any information from VTP, so there is in fact no relation and you are safe.

Only MISTP (a cisco proprietary ancestor of MST, only available on CatOS) had some links with VTP. VTP on the other hand may use the spanning tree information of vlan 1 to flood VTP packets when VTP is disabled on the switch.

Francois
