Do you need to have a VLAN 1 as your native VLAN on your switch if you are configuring VTP?

No, but your VTP frames will then be tagged with vlan 1. VTP traffic is always sent on vlan 1. This is different from IEEE STP BPDUs are are supposed to be always sent untagged on the link, regardless of the native vlan.
