What does Rcv-Err counter exactly mean?

We have a Catalyst 6513 where we record some Rcv-Err. In the command reference I found the explanation:

Rcv-Err

Number of receive errors that occurred on the port (indicating that the internal receive buffer is full).

Does this mean every frame (broadcast, multicast or unicast) that arrives when the receive buffer is full will increment the Rcv-Err counter and the frame are discarded?

Port Align-Err FCS-Err Xmit-Err Rcv-Err UnderSize

1/1 0 0 0 1104 0

Thanks for replay.

Re: What does Rcv-Err counter exactly mean?

Hi.

See http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/53.shtml, at 'Possible Causes for Incrementing CatOS Counters', where you can read:

'This is an indication of excessive output rates of traffic. This is also an indication of the receive buffer being full. This counter should be zero unless there is excessive traffic through the switch. In some switches, the outlost counter has a direct correlation to the Rcv-Err.'

As well, the whole doc will help you understand many other tips concerning switches.

Hope this help you enough.

José Luis De Diego.
