what is considered a good maximum user count for a flat subnet

Looking for a good rule of thumb for the amount of users per subnet on a totally 10/100/1000 switched network.

Backbone is all GIG.

Have about 2500 users across 8 floors, with as many as 600 users on one floor.

Re: what is considered a good maximum user count for a flat subn

Try to have 1 subnet per VLAN and per switch at the access layer.
