A RADIUS server performs both authentication and accounting.
When a user logs in a device enabled with RADIUS, the authentication request is sent to the RADIUS server, It checks the usename and password and then allows the access to the device. Authentication data can be maintained locally or on an external database.
Similarly it performs accounting function too, it can again store the information locally or in an external database.
