What's the difference that the router really do between Auto-RP and BSR?

Hi All,

Can any body tell me what's the real difference between Auto-RP and BSR in Multicast? It's seems that there is no difference and just change two commands in the routers: change the "ip pim send-rp-discovery" command to "ip pim bsr candidate" in the mapping agent and change the "ip pim send-rp-announce" to "ip pim rp-candidate" command in the RP. Can any body tell me the truth? Thank You!

Best Regards

Teru Lei

Re: What's the difference that the router really do between Auto

Auto-RP is a non standards based implementation that preceded BSR. Originally it was Cisco proprietary but has since been implanted by the likes of Juniper.

BSR is standards based and is definded in RFC 2362 (Protocol Independent Multicast-Sparse Mode (PIM-SM): Protocol Specification)

Both of them are virtually doing the same, except that, BSR can be implemented in a network, where all routers are running PIM version 2.
