Why do the Catalyst 2948G, 4000, 5500 and 6000 continuously send ICMP echoes (pings) to their configured default gateways.

I found all the CatOS switches are continuously pinging their default-gateway (a MSFC). What is the reason?

This is normal behavior. The switch is verifying connectivity to the default gateway since you can have multiple default gateways configured on the switch. To turn the feature off, you need recent software and use the command "set feature mdg disable"
